Ingredients You’ll Need to Make Pudding Shots with Vodka

PUDDING: To make these pudding shots you will need a package of chocolate instant pudding and a package of vanilla instant pudding. Be sure to pick up instant pudding and not cook and serve pudding.

MILK: Pick up whole milk to make this pudding but if you have 2% milk on hand that’s fine to use.

VODKA: Add the boozy fun to these pudding shots with your favorite vodka. It doesn’t have to be top shelf but try to grab something you like the taste of. Flavored vodkas like vanilla and caramel are a great way to boost the taste of these pudding shots a bit. Just know that flavored vodkas have a lower ABV than regular vodka.

WHIPPED TOPPING: Purchase a tub of Cool Whip for this recipe and be sure to thaw it ahead of time. You don’t want whipped cream for this recipe. You could get away with stabilized whipped cream if you really don’t want to use Cool Whip.

GARNISH: If you want to go the delicious extra mile then pick up extra whipped topping to garnish these shots, along with sprinkles, chocolate sauce, chocolate curls, or caramel sauce.

Tips & Tricks

  • The pudding shots have a soft serve consistency so if you prefer your pudding a little thicker then fold in an additional 4 ounces of whipped topping.
  • Now that you know the secret to making pudding shots you can make them with any flavor of pudding and any kind of alcohol, just remember to keep the ratios the same!
  • When you are grabbing the pudding at the store be sure to grab instant pudding and not cook and serve pudding- the pudding shots won’t set the same with cook and serve pudding.
  • Store the pudding shots covered in the fridge for up to a week or store them in the freezer for up to three months. Keep the shots chilled while serving them too- storing them in a bowl with ice for people to grab is convenient or in a cold cooler.

Pudding Shots Recipe FAQ

How do you eat a pudding shot?

Thick and creamy pudding shots are not easily thrown back like a liquid shot so you’ll need spoons. Thinner pudding shots may be pourable but spoons are easiest in the long run. Also, the more toppings you use the more you will want a spoon! Set out plenty of small spoons next to the pudding shots so that everyone can grab one and enjoy their shots.

If you use squeezable jello shot cups (they are pretty awesome) you can skip the spoon and they’re super easy to squeeze.

Why won’t my pudding shots set?

Mixing higher-proof alcohols, like 100-proof vodka, with pudding can produce a runny situation. That’s where the whipped topping comes in! The addition of whipped topping not only makes the pudding shots extra creamy but mostly helps the pudding set so you don’t want to skip this ingredient! Lower-proof liqueurs, like Bailey’s or RumChata, don’t require this extra step – but they taste great with the fluffy Cool Whip! So when mixing your own pudding shots, remember to check the proof of the alcohol before mixing up this recipe.

Instructions

  • Add one flavor of pudding mix to a medium mixing bowl. Pour in the milk and vodka and whisk for 2 minutes.
  • Use a rubber spatula to fold in the whipped topping until there are no streaks left. Place the bowl in the fridge for 10 minutes to set.
  • Repeat these steps with the chocolate pudding, milk, vodka, and Cool Whip.
  • Arrange the plastic cups (lids off) on baking sheets. Spoon one pudding flavor into 16 of the cups until mostly full. Repeat with the other flavor.
  • Refrigerate for 1 hour before serving.
  • Top with a dollop of Cool Whip, sprinkles, and/or chocolate shavings if desired. Keep chilled until ready to serve.

Notes

  • Each 3.4-ounce box of instant pudding mix will make 16 shots.
  • This recipe results in a soft-set pudding. If you want it a little firmer shot, add an additional 4 ounces of whipped topping to each pudding flavor.
  • Store any leftovers in the fridge for up to 1 week. These shots freeze well for up to 3 months. They most likely will not freeze completely due to the alcohol content, but if you want them extra cold this is a great option.

Can I use whiskey instead of vodka?

    1. Hi Ellen. Yes, if you’re a whiskey lover, it would pair nicely with the vanilla and chocolate flavors. Vodka is used so the base pudding flavor stands out, since vodka doesn’t have a flavor of its own.

Absolutely delicious! I’ve made pistachio, chocolate, vanilla and coconut. Always a hit at parties!
