What is in a grasshopper drink?
Traditionally a grasshopper is made of vanilla ice cream, green creme de menthe, and creme de cocoa blended together. The glass is drizzled with chocolate syrup, the cocktail is poured in and then topped with whipped cream.
Sounds pretty good right? Since ice cream doesn’t really translate into jello shots (or because I’m lazy and didn’t want to wait for it to melt) I swapped out for half-n-half, a little sugar and we’re mixing into the chocolate syrup.
How to Make Grasshopper Jello Shots
- Mix together unflavored gelatin powder and half-n-half. Let sit.
- Whisk in hot half-n-half, liqueur, and mix in. Repeat for the other flavor/color layer.
- Pour a layer of chocolate jello in 2-ounce plastic ramekins and chill until just set.
- Layer with mint jello and chill again.
- When ready to serve, top with a dollop of whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles if you want.
Super easy and totally pretty. Pretty jello shots are fun. I took the extra time to make 2 layers of each flavor. You can totally just do an easy 1/2 and 1/2 fill with the mint layer on top – trust me, it looks better.
The whipped cream and sprinkles are completely optional but will score you major presentation points. Also, don’t add the whipped cream ahead of time. It needs to stay cold and it won’t look nice when you take the lid off the cup.
Make a double batch, share with friends, and get your Irish on this St. Patrick’s Day! These jello shots are so good you’ll be looking for a reason to make them all year long!

Grasshopper Jello Shots
Ingredients
Chocolate Layer
- 1 tablespoon unflavored gelatin powder (1 envelope)
- ¼ cup half-n-half cold
- ½ cup half-n-half
- ¼ cup chocolate syrup
- ½ cup vodka
Mint Layer
- 1 tablespoon unflavored gelatin powder (1 envelope)
- ¼ cup half-n-half cold
- ½ cup half-n-half
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- ½ cup green crème de menthe
Garnish
- Whipped cream
- Chocolate jimmies
- Andes mints chopped
Instructions
- Place 12 2-ounce plastic ramekins on a baking sheet or in a baking dish. (This makes them easier to transport. Set aside.
Chocolate Layer
- In a medium bowl, whisk together gelatin powder and 1/4 cup half-n-half. Let sit for a few minutes until the gelatin is dissolved.
- In a small saucepan, heat 1/2 cup half-n-half until just starting to simmer. Pour the hot half-n-half into the bowl with the gelatin whisking to incorporate. Keep stirring until gelatin dissolves. Pour in chocolate syrup and vodka, and stir to combine.
- Fill each ramekin 1/2 full with chocolate jello. Chill for 30 minutes in the fridge or until jello has just set up. (It might be slightly tacky to the touch still.)
Mint Layer
- In a medium bowl, whisk together gelatin powder and 1/4 cup half-n-half. Let sit for a few minutes until the gelatin is dissolved.
- In a small saucepan, heat 1/2 cup half-n-half until just starting to simmer. Pour the hot half-n-half into the bowl with the gelatin whisking to incorporate. Keep stirring until gelatin dissolves. Pour in sugar and crème de menthe, and stir to combine.
- Fill each ramekin the rest of the way with mint jello. (Leave a little room at the top so your lid doesn't stick to the shots.) Chill for 2 hours or until set. Serve immediately or top with lids and chill until ready to serve.
Notes
- If you want riched jello shots, you can substitute heavy cream for half-n-half.
- In place of the vodka, you can substitute white crème de cacao or chocolate vodka if you prefer.
- If you want more than 2 layers (as pictured) fill each cup 1/4 full with chocolate jello, chill 20 minutes. Fill to the 1/2 way point with mint jello, chill 20 minutes. Fill 3/4 full with chocolate jello, chill 20 minutes. Top with mint jello and chill 2 hours. It takes a little more time, but the presentation is pretty.
