Mexican Mule
This Mexican Mule is the cocktail I make when taco night is already underway, and I want something cold in my hand without turning it into a whole production. It’s made with tequila, ginger beer, lime, and sweet and sour mix, and it comes together in about 3 minutes. The salted rim gives it that margarita-meets-mule vibe that makes it ridiculously easy to sip.
I started making these when I wanted something a little different from my usual margarita but didn’t feel like hauling out a cocktail shaker. After the first couple of rounds, it became one of those drinks I kept coming back to because it’s simple, refreshing, and always hits the spot.

Why This Mexican Mule Recipe Works
This is one of those cocktails that’s easy to love because it doesn’t ask much from you.
- It comes together in about 3 minutes.
- You don’t need a cocktail shaker or any fancy bar tools.
- The ginger beer gives it that classic mule kick.
- The sweet and sour mix softens the tequila and gives the drink a slightly margarita-like finish.
- The salted rim keeps everything balanced and prevents the cocktail from tasting too sweet.

Ingredients
You only need a handful of ingredients to make this tequila mule.
- Ginger beer: This gives the cocktail its bubbly finish and signature spicy bite. Use ginger beer instead of ginger ale for the best flavor.
- Silver tequila: I like silver tequila here because it keeps the drink bright and crisp. Since there aren’t many ingredients in the glass, use one you already enjoy drinking.
- Sweet and sour mix: This is what gives this version a softer, more margarita-inspired flavor.
- Fresh lime: Lime brightens everything up and balances the sweetness.
- Margarita salt: A salted rim makes every sip taste a little more balanced.
- Ice: Lots of it. This drink is best ice cold.
What Kind of Ginger Beer Is Best?
I prefer a ginger beer with a noticeable spicy kick instead of one that’s overly sweet. Fever-Tree, Bundaberg, and Cock ‘n Bull are all great options, but honestly, any ginger beer with a good ginger bite will work well here.

How to Make a Mexican Mule
This cocktail couldn’t be much easier to make.
- Salt the Rim: Rub a lime wedge around the rim of your mug or glass and dip it into margarita salt. You only need a light coating. Too much salt can take over the drink.
- Fill with Ice: Fill the mug almost to the top with ice. The more ice you use, the colder and crisper the cocktail will stay.
- Add the Tequila and Sweet and Sour Mix: Pour in the tequila and the sweet and sour mix. This creates the base of the drink and gives you that familiar tequila-and-lime flavor.
- Top with Ginger Beer: Pour the ginger beer in last so it stays as fizzy as possible.
- Finish with Lime: Squeeze in a lime wedge, give everything a gentle stir, and garnish with another lime wedge if you’d like.
You’re looking for a cocktail that’s cold, crisp, and refreshing with plenty of ginger flavor and just enough lime to keep everything bright.
Do You Need a Copper Mug?
Not at all. A copper mug keeps the drink extra cold and gives it that classic mule presentation, but a rocks glass works perfectly well, too.
Helpful Tips Before You Mix
A few small things can make a good Mexican Mule even better.
- Go easy on the salt rim. You want it to complement the drink, not dominate it.
- Taste and adjust if needed. Some sweet and sour mixes are tangier than others. I really like this homemade sour mix because it’s consistent.
- Fresh lime juice makes a noticeable difference.
- Serve the cocktail right away while the ginger beer is still bubbly.
- If you’re making a batch for friends, wait to add the ginger beer until serving time so it stays fizzy.

FAQ
What is a Mexican Mule?
A Mexican Mule is a tequila-based version of a Moscow Mule. Instead of vodka, tequila is mixed with ginger beer and lime.
What’s the difference between a Mexican Mule and a Moscow Mule?
The main difference is the liquor. Moscow Mules use vodka, while Mexican Mules use tequila.
Can I use ginger ale instead of ginger beer?
You can, but the drink will be sweeter and won’t have that signature mule bite. Ginger beer is definitely the better choice here.
Does a Mexican Mule usually have sweet and sour mix?
Not always. Many recipes stick to tequila, ginger beer, and lime. I like adding sweet and sour mix because it gives the drink a slightly smoother, margarita-inspired finish.
Why add a salted rim?
The salt helps balance the sweetness and makes the tequila and lime flavors pop a little more.
Can I make a spicy Mexican Mule?
Absolutely. Muddle a few jalapeño slices in the bottom of the mug before adding the ice and the rest of the ingredients.
Can I make these ahead of time?
You can mix the tequila and sweet and sour mix ahead of time, but wait to add the ginger beer until just before serving so it stays bubbly.
Can I make a pitcher of Mexican Mules?
Yes! For 4 drinks, combine 1 cup tequila, 1 cup sweet and sour mix, and 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice in a pitcher. Add 48 ounces of ginger beer right before serving over ice.

Mexican Mule Recipe
Equipment
- Copper Mule Mug or Rocks Glass
Ingredients
- 1 lime cut into wedges
- margarita salt
- 2 ounces silver tequila
- 2 ounces sweet and sour mix
- 12 ounces ginger beer
Instructions
- Run 1 lime wedge around the rim of the mug, then dip the rim into margarita salt to coat.

- Carefully fill the mug with ice, trying not to knock off the salt.
- Pour 2 ounces silver tequila and 2 ounces sweet and sour mix into the mug. Then pour in 12 ounces ginger beer (or enough to fill the mug). Squeeze another lime wedge over the cocktail and then stir.

- Garnish with a fresh lime wedge on the rim and serve it immediately. (I use the same wedge I used to rim the mug for the garnish.)

Notes
- For a spicy mule, muddle jalapeño slices in the mug before adding the ice.
- Use freshly squeezed lime juice for the brightest flavor.
- Add ginger beer last to keep it fizzy.
