Ingredients You’ll Need to Make Strawberry Lime Margarita Jello Shots
JELLO: Grab a box of strawberry jello to make these shots. If you are doubling or tripling the recipe, be sure to pick up the number of boxes you need.
ALCOHOL: For these jello shots you will need tequila and orange liqueur, such as Cointreau. Choose a silver, blanco, or white tequila that you like the taste of. Also, chill the liquor ahead of time for the best jello shot results.
WATER: To make the jello you will need boiling water but you will also need cold water to mix in a little later.
FRUIT: Pick up a few fresh limes to juice for the shots and for slicing into wedges for the garnish. If you want to garnish the shots with sliced strawberries then grab those too.
SALT: If you’d like to rim the shots with salt then pick margarita salt or Kosher salt. You can also rim the shots with sugar if you prefer your shots to be sweet!

STEP 4 Once the shots are set and you’re ready to serve, rim the cups with a wedge of lime and dip the rim into the salt or sugar. Garnish with a lime wedge and/or a strawberry slice and enjoy!

Tips & Tricks
- Store the shots covered and in the fridge until you are ready to serve them. You can keep them in a cooler or a large bowl of ice if you’re serving them at an outdoor event. The jello shots will last for two weeks.
- Double or triple the amount of each ingredient to make enough for a large crowd. You can also set out sliced strawberries, lime wedges, and salt or sugar for everyone to garnish their own shots!
- When mixing the boiling water and the powdered jello, be sure to completely dissolve the jello powder before adding the cold ingredients. If the jello isn’t fully dissolved the jello shots will not properly set.
- If you prefer not to use the orange liqueur or just run out, you can replace the liqueur with 2 tablespoons of cold water. For a stronger shot, replace the 1/4 cup of water with 1/4 cup of tequila.

Serve Margarita Strawberry Jello Shots in Fruit Instead of Cups!
- Strawberry margarita jello shots in limes – cut a lime in half and hollow out the center so just the peel is left. Make little foil rings to set the lime shells in (so they don’t tip over) on a baking sheet. Arrange the lime halves and pour the jello mixture into the limes until filled. Chill for 3 hours and then cut each lime half into 2 or 3 wedges.
- Strawberry margarita jello shots in strawberries – remove the stem of some strawberries and cut out the center of the berry to make a cup shape. Then, cut just enough off the tip of the strawberry so that will stand up. Be sure not to cut too much or you’ll make a hole that goes through to the center and the jello will run out. Arrange the strawberries in an ice cube tray to keep them upright. Prepare the jello mixture and fill each strawberry to the top. Refrigerate for 2-3 hours until set. If desired, dip the top of each strawberry in salt or sugar and garnish with a little lime wedge.

Strawberry Margarita Jello Shot FAQ
What kind of tequila is best for jello shots?
The obvious answer to which tequila to use for jello shots is one you like. You will taste the tequila in these strawberry margarita jello shots so make it one that has a good flavor and you enjoy.
Most people agree that silver tequila is a crowd favorite for its smoothness and ability to let the fruit flavors shine, rather than dominating the shot. A silver, Blanco, or white tequila will also not change the color of the shot so it will be beautifully bright!
When making jello shots, do you replace the water with alcohol?
To make jello shots you need both water and alcohol because to properly dissolve the jello mix you will need boiling water, which can not be replaced with alcohol. Jello is typically made with 2 cups of water, so when making jello shots you replace up to half of the water with alcohol. Replacing more than half of the water with alcohol will prevent your jello shots from setting correctly, so it’s best to stick to the amount listed in the recipe.

Strawberry Margarita Jello Shots
Ingredients
- 3 ounces strawberry jello (1 small box)
- 1 cup boiling water
- ½ cup silver tequila
- ¼ cup cold water
- 2 tablespoons orange liqueur (like Grand Marnier)
- 2 tablespoons lime juice freshly squeezed
Garnishes
- Margarita salt or sugar
- Lime wedges
- Strawberries cut in half or sliced
Instructions
- Arrange 12 2-ounce plastic cups (without lids) on a baking sheet. Set aside.
- Add the jello and boiling water to a 4+ cup measuring cup or medium mixing bowl with a spout. Whisk until the jello dissolves completely.
- Whisk in the tequila, cold water, orange liqueur, and lime juice.
- Pour the jello mixture into the plastic cups, filling them about 3/4 full each. Refrigerate for 2-3 hours until the jello is set.
- When you're ready to serve, run a lime wedge around the rim of one of the plastic cups and then dip the rim into margarita salt or granulated sugar. Garnish with a lime wedge and/or a strawberry and they're good to go. *Skip this step if you'll be taking the shots to a party or not serving them immediately, instead pop the lid on each cup.
Notes
- Store any extra shots in the fridge with the lids on the cups for up to 1 week.
- If you want to give these shots more of a kick, swap out the 1/4 cup of cold water for an extra 1/4 cup of tequila.
- I recommend silver tequila. Gold tequila can slightly change the color of the shots, but if that’s all you have on hand it’s 100% fine to use gold tequila instead of silver.
