You won’t believe the secret ingredient in my sister Lisa’s Guacamole Dip! It makes this dip completely addicting. This is THE must make dip recipe for our family!
Living in the southwest, guacamole has become a fixation for me. I love to have it on my taquitos, dip my chips in it, and hoard it from my family. Lucky for me they don’t care for avocado anything. But this guacamole dip is not your everyday guac. It’s a creamy, yummy dip that my family has at every party. Every. Single. One. While this recipe is a little unorthodox for the guacamole purist, it’s worth a taste friends.

This guacamole dip recipe first appeared when my sister Lisa made it 10+ years ago. My dad and I have always loved cottage cheese (we dip our Fritos in it!) and Lisa joined the band wagon. I wondered about the guacamole dip because I’d never seen anyone put cottage cheese in guac before. One taste and I was hooked! This dip is completely addicting. Buy extra tortilla chips because you will want to eat all the dip!
How Do You Make Guacamole Dip
- Cut avocados in half. Remove pit and scoop out the flesh into a large bowl. Use a fork to mash the avocados to your desired consistency.
- Add lime juice, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and cayenne. Stir until well-combined.
*You could stop right here and have really yummy guacamole. - Add cottage cheese and stir until combined. Adjust salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately, or cover and store in the fridge until ready to serve.
Storage Tip: If you’ve ever worked with avocados you know your guac dip turns brown after being exposed to air for a while. Leaving the pit from one avocado on top of your homemade guacamole dip before storing will help keep it green longer.
The big thing to remember with a recipe this simple is choosing quality, fresh ingredients.
- Ripe avocados will have dark greenish-black skin and when you squeeze the fruit it’ll give a little. If your avocados aren’t quite ripe, throw them in a paper bag on your kitchen counter for a couple of days.
- Spices are my jam for this recipe. I don’t like chunks of red onion, tomato, and cilantro running around this dip. Yes, I love them in traditional guacamole, but not here.
- Fresh Lime Juice is best, but if you don’t have any on hand bottle lime juice will work too.
- I’m a cottage cheese snob. We only use Knudsen small curd cottage cheese for this guacamole dip recipe. You can use your favorite brand, but make sure to choose one that doesn’t have a lot of extra liquid floating around. You don’t want to thin out the dip or have too much of that cottage cheese tang overpowering the avocado and spices.
You don’t have to wait for Cinco de Mayo to enjoy this dip. I make it when we’re watching baseball or football games, birthday parties, or when we’re hanging out in the backyard. This is a great recipe to surprise your friends with. It’ll be a hit every time. Promise.

My family has always made guacamole with cottage cheese. I’m 58 years old and from my earliest memories this is the only way my family made guacamole. We have passed this recipe down for generations, from my grandmother to my mother, and now to my daughters and grandchildren..
I’m glad your sister took the chance and added cottage cheese to her guacamole.
