Ingredients You’ll Need to Make Hot Cocoa Dip with Cream Cheese

CREAM CHEESE: Set out a brick of cream cheese to soften to room temperature to make mixing this dip easier. You can choose either regular, low-fat, or Neufchatel cream cheese but for the best flavor, avoid non-fat cream cheese.

HOT COCOA MIX: For this dip, you can use your favorite packets of hot cocoa mix. For a nice rich chocolate flavor, the Ghiradelli Premium Hot Cocoa Mix was used in this recipe.

MARSHMALLOW CREME: You will need a container of marshmallow creme, such as Jet-Puffed or Marshmallow Fluff, for example, to make this dip.

WHIPPED TOPPING: Grab your favorite tub of whipped cream and make sure it’s thawed before you make this hot cocoa dip for easy mixing.

GARNISH: Why not pick up a bag of mini marshmallows to garnish the dip with? They’re so fun to snack on!

DIPPERS: Be sure to have your favorite cookies and fruit on hand to serve with this fantastic dip!

Tips & Tricks

  • The hot cocoa dip gets its rich chocolate flavor from the hot cocoa so be sure to use a quality mix. Packets of hot cocoa can also be used if that’s what you have on hand.
  • Folding in the whipped topping gives the dip a great mousse texture so be sure to fold it in by hand, rather than beating it in.
  • Let’s talk mix-ins! Easily add hints of additional flavors such as almond, orange, strawberry, maple, or peppermint by including flavored extracts! You can also stir in chopped candy canes, chopped nuts, mini chocolate chips, or crushed candy bars. Take this dip in a variety of delicious directions!
  • Keep this dip in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days or place it in a freezer-safe contain or bag and freeze for up to 3 months.

Hot Cocoa Dip Recipe FAQ

Do I have to use Cool Whip in this dip?

Whipped topping is a wonderful ingredient in this dip and gives the dip a fluffy, mousse-like texture. While folding in a tub of whipped cream is pretty easy, your favorite homemade whipped cream can be used instead, provided it is made with a stabilizer like gelatin. Making stabilized whipped cream ensures that it won’t deflate, separate into layers, and lose the air that’s been whipped into the cream.

What should I serve with hot cocoa dip?

There are so many delicious cookies, crackers, and fruit that you can serve with hot cocoa dip that you might even want to make a dessert charcuterie tray, similar to this S’mores Dessert Board!

When it comes to cookies and crackers, vanilla wafers, Oreo cookies, graham crackers, animal crackers, and sugar-topped pita chips are amazing with this dip. Fruit like strawberries, bananas, and apple slices pair well with the rich chocolate flavor of the dip. Other sweet ideas to add can be slices of pound cake, angel food cake, and large marshmallows. Surround the dip with a variety of treats and with all of the mixing and matching, the hot cocoa dip will be gone in a flash!

Once you have the sweets covered, fill the rest of your hors d’oeuvres table with mouthwatering savory bites that are perfect for every holiday party! Enjoy a festive Pigs In a Blanket Wreath, Brown Sugar Bacon Wrapped Little Smokies, and everyone’s favorite creamy Crescent Roll Baked Brie. Last but not least, keep all of the grown-ups jolly with a traditional holiday drink like Bourbon Milk Punch!
