Ingredients You’ll Need to Make Apple Crumb Pie
PIE CRUST: Purchase your favorite pre-made pie crust to make this pie. If you have a favorite homemade recipe, feel free to use that or check out this pie crust recipe.
PRODUCE: The key to a great apple pie is to pick the right apples. For this recipe, Granny Smith apples are preferred because they are sweet, and tart and stay slightly crisp after baking. Other apples such as Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, and Braeburn can be used as well. Don’t forget to grab a lemon to add a little fresh squeezed juice to the pie.
PANTRY ITEMS: For the pie you will need all-purpose flour, and both granulated sugar and brown sugar.
SPICES: Set out the cinnamon and nutmeg to use in this recipe.
CRUMB TOPPING FOR APPLE PIE: For the topping, you will need a little more all-purpose flour, more brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and melted unsalted butter.
How to Make an Apple Crumb Pie
Jump to RecipeSTEP 1 Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F and set the prepared pie crust aside. In a large bowl, mix the apples, lemon juice, granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg together until the apples are fully coated.
STEP 2 Place the apples in the pie crust and set aside.
STEP 3 In a medium bowl, stir the brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon together. Pour the melted butter over the dry ingredients and mix until it forms a crumb. Top the apple pie with the crumb, using all of the crumb to completely cover the pie well.
STEP 4 Cover the pie loosely with tin foil and bake for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, remove the foil and continue to bake the pie for another 15-20 minutes, until the top of the pie is golden brown.
STEP 5 Remove the pie from the oven and allow the pie to cool completely before slicing.
Tips & Tricks
- Granny Smith is the preferred apple to use in this recipe but again, Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, or Braeburn can also be used. These types of apples will become tender and crisp, with no mushy apples to ruin the party!
- If you don’t care for nutmeg then it can easily be kicked out of the recipe and there is no need to substitute a different spice.
- Love a little crunch in your pie? Consider adding nuts like pecans or walnuts to the filling for a deliciously crunchy bite!
- Those juicy apples sometimes leak over the side of the pie so it’s always a great idea to put a baking sheet under the pie to catch anything that bubbles over.
- My family likes a scoop of vanilla ice cream with this pie, but is really good all by itself too.
Apple Crumb Pie Recipe FAQ
What is the difference between apple crisp and apple crumb pie?
Apple crumb pie and apple crisp are very similar and contain many of the same ingredients, except for one – oats! Oats are a traditional ingredient included in crisp recipes for added chewiness. It may be a small difference but it’s there!
There is also no pie crust for an apple crisp. The fruit is added to the baking dish, topped with the oat mixture, and then baked.
What is the difference between apple crumb pie and Dutch apple pie?
There is virtually no difference between the two except that perhaps a little more cinnamon is used in apple crumb pie recipes. Both pies have a crumb topping instead of a top pie crust and use the same combination of flavors in the filling.
Does apple crumb pie need to be refrigerated?
Yes, this pie, and really all fruit pies, should be stored in the fridge. Apple crumb pie can be stored in the fridge for up to 4 days or covered and frozen for up to 3 months.
To reheat, microwave a slice of refrigerated pie for 15-20 seconds to warm it again. Let frozen pies thaw in the fridge overnight before warming slices in the microwave.

Notes
- You can use unsalted butter if you don’t have salted butter. Be sure to add 1/4 teaspoon salt to the crumb topping dry ingredients before mixing in the butter.
- I used Granny Smith apples, but you can use any baking apple you prefer. We like Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious, Pink Lady, or Braeburn apples for this recipe too.
- If you don’t like nutmeg, you can leave it out. No need to substitute anything for it.
- Store any leftovers in the fridge for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat slices in the microwave for 10-15 seconds.
