This Grasshopper drink recipe is part cocktail, part milkshake, and all totally delicious! It’s the perfect drink to make when you crave chocolate and mint!
When it comes to cocktails, I have a special place in my heart for blended drinks. I love them! It’s totally in contrast to my “whiskey neat” side, but they’re so fun and tasty! It’s like an adult milkshake and who doesn’t love that?!
One of my favorites is a Grasshopper with ice cream. It’s creamy, rich, and bursting with mint and chocolate flavors. The presentation is pretty fun too. Heck, I like this drink so much I even turned it into Grasshopper Jello Shots!

Hey Bread Booze Bacon fans! I’m so happy to be here and share a boozy delicious cocktail with you! My name is Lisa, and I blog over at Wine & Glue.
My blog is packed with tons of delicious recipes and super easy crafts! You know, the kind you can do with a glue gun in one hand and a glass of wine in the other. Get it?
So I thought that since I’m here today because Julie is off getting married, that I would share one of my husband’s favorite drinks. He’s not much of a drinker, and not much of a liquor drinker, he usually likes to just have a beer.
But! He does love ice cream.
And mint.
And he really likes when ice cream and mint and chocolate are all thrown together. Add some booze to that, and we have a happy Nathan.
I made this drink for Nathan on Christmas Eve this year after the kids went to bed. I sipped wine, he guzzled Grasshoppers and we watched Bad Santa by the fireplace. Not even joking.
And that is the secret to a happy marriage. Bad Santa, Grasshoppers, and a fire.
Nathan and I have been married for a little over 10 years. We are by no means experts at marriage, but we have been through our fair share of serious challenges, and come out on the other side still together, and stronger for it. So here is my huge marital advice for Mike and Julie: Be kind.
Kindness is the answer to so many things in life, but I think that it is the answer even more often in marriage. If you two crazy kids can remember to be kind to each other, you will be fine.
And Grasshopper cocktails on Christmas Eve are a nice plus.
What is in a grasshopper drink?
I’ve seen this cocktail made two ways – a grasshopper drink with ice cream and without. This version is with ice cream. It’s the one I learned to make while bartending and I’m sticking with it. You’ll need…
- Vanilla ice cream
- Green crème de menthe – This gives the cocktail it’s pretty color
- White crème de cacao – Don’t buy the brown crème de cacao for this recipe!! It’ll turn it a horrible color.
- Heavy cream or half-and-half
- Chocolate syrup – This is my favorite syrup for lining glasses. It’s thicker than most chocolate sauces and doesn’t just pool in the bottom of the glass.
- Whipped cream
- Chocolate sprinkles
How to Make a Grasshopper Drink
- Start by lining milkshake glasses (or other tall glass) with chocolate syrup. Just drizzle it around the side of the glass a bit. There’s no wrong pattern, jut done’s completely cover the sides. You want to see your drink through the chocolate.
- Then pop the glasses into your freezer to hold the chocolate in place. It’ll just be for a few minutes.
- Now you’re ready to make this grasshopper drink recipe. Add the ice cream, crème de menthe, and crème de cacao to a blender. Turn the blender on a blend until the cocktail is nice and smooth.
- Troubleshooting: If your cocktail isn’t coming together add 1 tablespoon of cream or half-and-half to help loosen things up and kickstart the blending. I usually run into this if my ice cream is still really cold.
- Then, take your chilled cocktail glasses out of the freezer and pour in the cocktail. Leave some room at the top of the glass.
- Time to garnish! Add some whipped cream on top and then some chocolate sprinkles or a drizzle of chocolate syrup. Your choice. Add a fun straw and start sippin’!
The key to this grasshopper recipe is not to add too much creme de menthe. Your cocktail should be a light, mint green color. Creme de menthe has a potent flavor that can overpower your drink if you add too much.
That being said, if you want your drink super minty you can add another 1/2 ounce of liqueur. I’d recommend making the recipe as is, trying it, and then deciding if you want more mint.
What kind of alcohol is creme de menthe?
Creme de menthe is a liqueur. Liqueurs are spirits made from a base liquor like grain neutral spirit (GNS), vodka, or Everclear – anything with no flavor. The GNS is then mixed with sugar and either herbs, fruits, spices, or other ingredients to create a flavored liqueur.
How much alcohol is in creme de menthe?
Creme de menthe is a 25% ABV (50 proof) spirit. Your typical spirits like vodka and tequila run around 80 proof, so this is a pretty hefty liqueur.
What is creme de menthe used for?
Typically creme de menthe is used to make cocktails like Grasshoppers and Stingers (white creme de menthe + brandy). But it is also used to make Peppermint Patty cocktails, Irish Eyes, and others.
Basically any drink where you want a mint flavor in the mix.
